Air Defender 2023 Schleswig-Jagel

Schleswig-Jagel airbase

Operating Tornado's, IDS and ECR, of TLG51 this was the airbase with the largest contingent of fighers/-bombers. Daily two large waves were flown, during which some aircraft made very long mission durations of 6 hours - others did not return and went overnight at other bases.

Participating aircraft on Schleswig-Jagel were 12 US F16C's of Colorado ANG and South Dakota ANG, 6 A10C's of the Michigan ANG, later exchanged by 6 A10C's of the Maryland ANG, 5 Hungarian Gripens and 3 Turkish F16C's.

The Michigan Warthogs flightlines were situated somewhat centre airbase. When starting up they would taxi towards the spotter area in between shelters before arriving on the taxiway very near, turning on the runway. All other aircraft took the same route - except the German Tornado's. It was really cool to see A10's roam the European skies once more - almost forget how they sounded! At the end of this particular week these 6 Michigan ANG A10C's were replaced by 6 Maryland ANG A10C's. Most of the aircraft made extreme long and far sorties into the East. Some remaining over lunch - other over night. A10C's used FOB's as well.

The US ANG F16 contingent had all kinds of aircraft: first of all their aircraft were standard addorned with really cool markings. Besides this two even had a special anniversary c/s, commander aircraft attended and some had very subtile markings - even with bomb markings referring to

Hungarian Gripens attended, some with Tiger Meet markings, together with Turkish F16's.

Tornado crews flew their homebase missions - one of the WSO gave some cool gestures, this pilot was also seen on German tv giving an interview about Air Defender. Below some visitors: a rare EF2000T and the usual SAR and Training EC helo's together with the Luftwaffe CIP AS532. A tankertrack was also active overhead performed by a EART A330-MRTT with 4 EF2000's.
